Atlanta is one of the busiest cities in the country. It is estimated that Atlanta drivers spend 52 hours a year in traffic, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. With so many drivers on the roads, it is no surprise that as many as 40 percents of all accidents occur in intersections. Intersections are difficult places to maneuver, even when there are traffic signals. Intersection accidents are among the most serious because they often involve T-bone accidents where one driver is traveling at a high rate of speed.
What Causes Intersection Accidents?
Intersection accidents have a variety of causes. Speeding, failure to yield, failure to obey a traffic signal, improper left turns and distracted driving are just some of the reasons why intersection accidents happen. The Atlanta intersections that have the most reported accidents include:
- Memorial Drive and N. Hairston Road, Stone Mountain
- East Park Place & Stone Mountain Highway
- Covington Highway and Panola Rd.
- Cobb Place Blvd and Earnest Barrett Parkway
- Jimmy Carter Blvd and Peachtree Industrial Blvd
Accidents are more common in intersections that are complicated and have several lanes of traffic in each direction. These intersections can be particularly confusing for those who are unfamiliar with the area. Drivers may be busy trying to maneuver through the intersection and not paying enough attention to the road and other drivers.
Of all the reasons for intersection accidents, distracted driving is likely one of the most common factors. When drivers approach an intersection, they should slow down and drive defensively. Unfortunately, drivers who are distracted by their cell phones, their music, or other passengers may not be paying enough attention to the road.
Preventing Intersection Accidents
Intersection accidents can be prevented. Drivers need to follow some simple guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of others while on our roads. Drivers must focus on the road.
Put down your phone and do not text while behind the wheel. Don’t participate in other activities that are distracting such as eating or talking to others. If you are unfamiliar with the area, drive slowly and stay to the right. Do not speed through intersections and leave a safe distance between you and the car in front. Be prepared to stop if the light turns yellow. When the light turns green, be sure to look for vehicles and pedestrians before you proceed. Always use your turn signal and follow all of the traffic laws.
When traveling at night or in poor weather conditions, take extra care while driving. Drive defensively and be prepared to stop if another driver gets in your way. Be particularly careful at intersections where there are no traffic signals or signs. Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists in and near intersections and crosswalks.
Fortunately, most accidents that occur are minor. However, sometimes they result in severe injuries. If you were hurt in a car accident you may be entitled to compensation from the negligent driver. Contact the Atlanta Car Accident Attorneys Bader Scott Injury Lawyers for a free case consultation.
